07/25/2022 Vehicle Use Policy and Tax Associated with Take Home Vehicles

Jena, City of Bakersfield

We are exploring some options for staff (other than emergency responders) to have take home vehicles in on all or those that may have to report to emerrgency situations during off duty hours. Can you please share your vehicle use policy and/or a take home vehicle policy if you have one.  Looking for the process your entity utilizes and how you notify staff of the tax associated with take home vehicles.  Thank you in advance!

Hi Jena,

Santa Barbara uses the attached documents as guidance relating to vehicle use by an employee.

Thank you Betsy.  If you can send a copy of your policy or process, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Jena, we do have a policy and it states that we report the value of the vehicle use to the IRS (I'm checking with Finance that we do in fact actually report it). Theoretically, departments should be giving their employees a copy of the policy when they assign a vehicle, so they would know about the taxability, but I'm checking on that, too. Beyond public safety, it's our utility that assigns take home vehicles. Thanks, Betsy
